Thinking about your next escape

Multi-day excursions starting in Zurich often come down to choosing your pace. If you want a blend of city and nature, try spending a night in Winterthur or Baden,we both have great museums and great hiking spots nearby.

One of my favorite spots to crash overnight is Rapperswil on Lake Zurich. The town itself is small, with a castle and rose gardens, but the surrounding lake paths feel endless and peaceful. Bonus: you can catch a ferry back to Zurich, which is a lovely, different way to see the lake. Also, don’t forget to pack layers,Swiss weather can do a fast switch from sun to drizzle, even in summer. Trust me, a good rain jacket saved a couple of my trips!

Frequently Asked Questions

Wondering about multi-day trips around Zurich? Here are some answers based on real local experience.

Honestly, the Swiss rail system is your best friend. Trains leave frequently and go just about everywhere nearby,no need to rent a car unless you want to explore tiny villages off the beaten path. Plus, regional passes can save you some francs if you plan a couple of day trips.
Absolutely. The Swiss National Park is a bit far but doable if you stay overnight nearby. Closer to Zurich, the Toggenburg region offers multi-day hikes with mountain huts. You can even try the Jura Crest Trail, which winds through forests and pastures with lovely guesthouses along the way.
I’d say both can work but booking outside the city usually gives a more genuine vibe and means you’re already in excursion mode. Sometimes, you’ll find charming bed and breakfasts in villages with excellent local food. Just check transport connections if you’re relying on public transit.
Spring and early fall are my favorites, the crowds are thinner, and the weather is generally pleasant. Summer can get warm and tourists flock to lakes, while winter trips around Zurich are great if you want to combine hiking with some cozy evenings by a fire.
For sure! The Zibelemärit (onion market) in November is wild and fun if you want to experience Swiss folk culture in nearby Bern. The Lucerne Festival in summer offers music after a day of lake views, and the St. Gallen Open-Air Festival if you swing a bit east. These can be great reasons to stretch a trip beyond Zurich.
