Local tips for cycling around Zurich

If you’re planning a weekend ride, hit the trail along the Limmat River early in the morning before the city wakes up. There’s a gorgeous quiet stretch near Seebach where you can almost forget you’re in a city. Also, try to avoid riding in Kreis 5 during the late afternoon; the trams and traffic can be a bit hectic then.

One of my favorite detours is to pop into the Viadukt , it’s an old railway viaduct turned shopping and dining arcade with secure bike parking. Great spot to rest and grab a coffee. And hey, if you’re up for a longer ride, don’t miss a loop around the lake that includes a ferry trip from Tiefenbrunnen to Meilen , it breaks up the cycling nicely and the views are pretty unbeatable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here’s the lowdown on common cycling questions in Zurich.

Absolutely. Zurich’s got dedicated bike lanes on many main streets and some gentle country paths nearby. Just watch out in busy areas like Bahnhofstrasse where pedestrians and trams mix. Renting a bike is easy too, either through Züri Velo or local shops.
You’ll find plenty of Züri Velo stations around the city for quick rentals, and there are some proper bike shops like Rentabike near the main train station with better road or e-bikes for longer rides.
For sure. A great ride is heading toward Rapperswil along the lake , just pack a picnic. It’s mostly flat and super scenic. Another option is the Veloroute 7 that runs out toward Winterthur if you want a longer day trip.
You can, but be careful. Many main routes are kept clear, but some hills and forest paths get icy and slippery. I usually switch to flat, well-maintained paths near the lake during those months.
Yes, you can bring your bike on most trams and trains, though sometimes not during rush hour. It’s handy if you want to combine cycling with a quick train ride to places like Uetliberg or Wollishofen.
Very much so. You’ll see loads of locals on e-bikes, especially for commuting or tackling steep spots. If you’re renting, definitely consider an e-bike for routes with hills , it makes a world of difference.
Plenty of options around the city, but I’d recommend Veloplus in Zurich West , they do good repairs and also have helpful advice if you’re stuck. Plus, there are a few DIY bike stations with tools near the lake.
