Description
Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, is located along the Rhine River and has just under 6,000 residents. Its history is evident in every building, representing the last remnants of the Holy Roman Empire. Originally called “Faduzes,” the name reflects its Latin origin from “aquaeductus,” meaning aqueduct. Positioned as a mountain enclave between important trade routes, Vaduz has historically been a desired territory.
The medieval mountainside castle, built during the Middle Ages, towers above the city as the main residence of the Prince of Liechtenstein and the ruling family. Visitors can explore the city center to see famous sculptures created by international artists and visit significant government buildings, including the Parliament building. The neo-Gothic cathedral, although small, holds importance and has been recognized as a cathedral since 1997.
