Description
Built in the 1860s near ETH Zurich’s main building, the Semper Observatory is among the university’s oldest research sites. Architects designed the observatory to study the cosmos, with generations of researchers making key observations here. The historic dome still houses the equipment used in the 19th century to track sunspots.
The Solar Tower, active from 1951 to 1980, was used to investigate the sun’s outer atmosphere and brought international scientific attention. This tour offers an opportunity to explore a significant piece of scientific heritage in Zurich’s architecture while learning about pioneering solar research.
