Description
Immerse yourself in the fascinating world of Vilhelm Hammershøi, one of the most important Danish painters of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The Kunsthaus Zürich presents the first comprehensive museum exhibition of Hammershøi in Switzerland, dedicated to his iconic interiors, portraits, cityscapes, and landscapes. The works are characterized by quiet rooms, closed doors, and figures seen from the back. Instead of a narrative storyline, you will experience a concentrated, almost meditative atmosphere in which light and space interact in subtle nuances.
Hammershøi's painting thrives on subtle gradations of muted colors and minimal changes in recurring motifs. This reduction gives his pictures a special intensity and directs the gaze to perception and atmosphere. Musical instruments such as the cello or piano appear in his works and open up another, almost audible dimension – the tense calm is reminiscent of the moment just before a concert begins. The exhibition places Hammershøi's work in an international context and shows the connection to artists such as James McNeill Whistler, which is reflected in the focus on formal aspects.
Organized by the Kunsthaus Zürich in cooperation with the Museo Nacional Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid, this exhibition offers unique access to Hammershøi's artistic world.
In addition, you will enjoy access to the entire collection of the Kunsthaus Zürich with masterpieces from different eras and styles. Special highlights include the immersive installations: Refik Anadol's 'Glacier Dreams' transports you into fascinating AI-generated visual worlds, while Pipilotti Rist's 'Pixelwald Turicum' creates a poetic spatial experience with light, color, and sound. The Art & Design Shop makes the visit complete with a curated selection. After your visit, the central location invites you to explore Zurich further or to linger in the Museum Bar, the café, or the restaurant.
